The Big Picture

The wellbeing of whales is directly influenced by water quality. Monitoring must include not only the pollutants in the water but also their environmental effects, such as algal blooms fed by fertilizer run-off.

The Antarctic ecosystem is dynamic, diverse and complex. At the base of the Antarctic food chain are some 350 species of phytoplankton. Understanding the system requires a multidisciplinary research approach including oceanography, biology, atmospherics, glaciology and more.
