Australia finally sets deadline for legal action

In a long overdue ultimatum, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has stated publically that unless there is agreement from the Japanese Government to reduce its Antarctic take of whales to zero, then the Australian Government will commence action in the International Court of Justice before Japan embarks on its next Antarctic whaling voyage in November this year. This follows more than two years of endeavours on the diplomatic front and the government's "evidence gathering" voyage of the Oceanic Viking to observe Japanese whaling activity in the Southern Ocean in 2008. Mr Katsuya Okada, Japan's Foreign Minister, has described the announcement as "very unfortunate".
