Japan's Antarctic whaling continues

The Japanese whaling fleet has returned to the port city of Shimonoseki, having reportedly slaughtered its 2017 “quota” of 333 minke whales.
Once more, the Japanese Government had authorised the Nisshin Maru and its fleet of harpoon-equipped chaser vessels to conduct the hunt in the name of scientific research. And once more, after a few tissue samples were taken from each whale, they were butchered, packaged and frozen aboard the factory ship for sale in Japan.
Despite Japan’s latest lethal research program, known as NEWREP A, having been dismissed as flawed science internationally, including at meetings of the International Whaling Commission’s Scientific Committee, the Japanese Government continues to submit to the demands of the nation’s powerful fisheries lobby.
