Watch what you eat Iceland style

Iceland has this year put unprecedented effort into promoting its growing whale watching industry, while at the same time escalating its commercial whaling activity.

Icelandair’s ‘Whale Watching City Break’ promotion offers UK customers the opportunity to view humpback and minke whales in ‘crystal clear Icelandic waters’ – waters that in places will run red with the blood of those very same minke whales.

The government of Iceland has issued its whaling fleet with permits for 150 minkes this season. The permits also include 150 fin whales, declared an endangered species by the globally recognised International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The ‘Whale Watching City Break’ package includes return flights from Glasgow, London Heathrow, or Manchester and three nights accommodation for around £300. It is not known whether whale meat is on the menu at the selected accommodation.
